About Me

Who I am?

Hi I’m Mary Kate Burns!

I grew up in Oxford, N.C. but about three years ago my family relocated to Greenville N.C.

Being from N.C. I am a born and bread Tar Heel, so attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the only option.

At UNC I study Advertising and Public Relations at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Along with AD/PR I am pursuing a minor in English.

My passions and hobbies.

Travel

I have always had a passion for traveling my whole life. It was not until I spent Spring 2023 studying abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland that this passion became a reality. During my time abroad I spent every weekend either exploring Scotland or hoping over to other countries in the UK and Europe. I have big interest in history and love exploring new places like castles, cities or trying amazing food.

Reading

Nothing I love more than being all cozied up on my couch reading a book. Something about being able to escape into a different world or a character’s head for a few hours is so magical. I am a sucker for any historical fiction novel, my favorite: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I am always on the hunt for new book recommendations.

Writing

After taking a fiction writing class at UNC I found a new love for writing. I had only really had experience writing academically so taking that class was definitely a challenge but led me to finding a new passion: blogging and creative writing. My Faith

Being a Christian is the most important passion in my life. When I am not writing, reading or traveling I am involved in on-campus ministry at UNC.

My why behind studying PR and Advertising.

I am a creative at my core. I do not mean artist. I can not draw or do graphic design to save my life. By creative I mean my heart pumps with creativity. From creative writing to coming up with crazy ideas for ads and campaigns. I love not being confined to a box and to brainstorm ways to do things that have never been done before. Until taking Intro to AD and PR I had no idea that there were careers out there that valued and involved this creative thinking. From that moment I was hooked.
